Storm Damage Roof Repair in Northfield, MN

Northfield sits right in the path of the summer storms that cross southern Minnesota. When a cell drops hail on Rice County, the damage rarely stops at one street: older two-story houses near downtown, newer homes on the edges of town and farm buildings toward Dundas can all take a hit in the same afternoon. This page is for Northfield-area owners who suspect a storm got to their roof and want a clear picture of what happens next.

Hail and wind damage we repair in Northfield, Dundas and Elko New Market

Our Northfield area page uses public weather records to show how often this happens. Hail an inch across or bigger, large enough to crack shingles, has fallen within 10 miles of Northfield 23 times in the years from 2016, most recently in August 2025. Thunderstorm gusts nearby have reached 110 mph. Housing age adds to the risk: more than half the homes in Rice County were built before 1980, so many roofs here are already on their second or third set of shingles and do not have much margin left.

Hail and wind each leave a different kind of mark. Ice falling straight down bruises the shingle, knocking off the granules that shield the asphalt from the sun. Those bare spots look like dark freckles up close and age quickly once exposed. Wind does its damage at the edges: it lifts the bottom of a shingle, tears the adhesive line that holds it down and leaves a crease. Both can sit unnoticed for a season, and both end up as leaks.

Elko New Market and the towns between Northfield and the metro see the same storms. Wherever the house is, the work looks the same: replace what the storm broke, match it to the roof that is left when a repair is enough, and replace the roof when the damage covers too much of it.

The free inspection

Omega Exteriors offers a free roof inspection that includes looking for storm damage. An inspector checks every slope, the ridge and the edges, the flashing at chimneys and walls, the vents, and the gutters and downspouts. Soft metal shows hail first, so dented gutter faces and vent caps help confirm how large the hail was.

What the inspection finds becomes the plan. You see photos of each damaged area and a written estimate that separates what can be repaired from what has to be replaced, slope by slope and wall by wall. If hail or high winds damaged your roof, Omega replaces or repairs it, and siding, gutters and windows hit by the same storm can be handled in the same project.

The steps from that first visit to the finished roof are laid out in our guide to storm damage repair and replacement.

Temporary protection after a storm

When a storm opens up a roof, the first job is to keep water out of the house. If you see water coming in, move belongings, catch the drips, take photos and keep receipts for anything you buy to protect the house in the meantime. Call the office and describe what you are seeing so we can talk through what can be done before the permanent repair. Please do not climb onto a damaged roof yourself.

Repair or replacement after a storm

Not every storm means a new roof. A few torn tabs or a lifted ridge cap can often be repaired with shingles that match. When hail has bruised a whole slope, though, a patch leaves weakened shingles next to new ones, and the damaged ones keep failing. That is when the inspection usually points toward a roof replacement.

A storm replacement is built like any other new roof: the old layers come off, damaged decking is replaced, ice barrier goes along the eaves and in the valleys, then new flashing, shingles and ridge ventilation. Omega Exteriors holds the IKO Craftsman Premier credential and installs IKO shingles. Our roof storm damage restoration page covers the service itself.

Commercial storm damage

Storms do not skip businesses, churches or apartment buildings. Flat and low-slope roofs show storm damage differently: punctured or split membrane, loose edge metal, and debris driven into the surface. If you manage a commercial property in the Northfield area, our page on commercial roofing in the Twin Cities explains the systems we work on and how commercial projects are scheduled.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

4 questions and answers.

What should I do the day a storm damages my roof?

Stay off the roof, keep water out of the house where you safely can, take photos, and write down the date and time of the storm. Then call the Farmington office to book the free inspection.

Will my roof be repaired or replaced?

That depends on how much of the roof the storm reached. Small, isolated damage, such as a few torn tabs, is often repaired with matching shingles; hail bruising spread across whole slopes usually leads to a replacement.

Do you repair storm damage on commercial buildings in Northfield?

Yes. Omega Exteriors provides commercial roofing in Minnesota and Wisconsin, including flat and low-slope roofs. Call the Farmington office to set up a look at the building.

How soon after a storm should the roof be inspected?

As soon as you can. Damage found early can be tarped or repaired before the next rain gets under it, and marks from a recent storm are easier to tell apart from ordinary wear.
